UGC – Sponsored  National Seminar on

Narrativizing Cultures of the North East : Indigenous to Contemporary

September 3 & 4, 2013 at I&PR Auditorium, Aizawl

Jointly organised by:

Department of English, Govt.T.Romana College
&
Mizoram English Literary Society (MIELS)

Concept Note:
To understand the unique position of the North East India is to understand its rich culture. Despite the apparent homogeneous existence as a singular entity, North East India is a cradle of multi-cultural negotiations expressed variedly in artistic forms including literature. The multitudinous essence of the North East provides an almost inexhaustible fodder for academic deliberation, much of which remains unexplored.  Rising from its history of colonialism and an urgent need to create its own space, indigenous voices from the region have been attempting unmitigated assertions of aspects of the North East from a multiplicity of perspectives. With a view to celebrating this oeuvre of literature, the seminar anticipates stimulating dialogues, debates, and illuminating insights arising out of these authentic voices that find their expressions in narratives of the North East.
The following sub themes, apart from others,  may be relevant for writing of the seminar papers:
    1. Pre and Post colonial praxis
    2. Folk lore:  oral, written and performance traditions
    3. Gender Narratives
    4.Ethnic identity and   assimilation
    5.Faith and Beliefs
    6.Contemporary culture
    7.Representations in cyber sphere.

Note:
Representations of culture through art forms other than literature are also welcome. Keeping these considerations in mind, the seminar hopes to generate richer understanding of the various facets of the culture in the North East. The seminar is to be organized in collaboration with the Mizoram English Literary Society (MIELS).
